Karamea Explorer

Route Overview

General Overview
The Karamea Explorer is a 159 km exploration route of all the great back roads and side tracks that Karamea offers. The epic vistas and attractions that this route leads you to are sure to drop jaws. Karamea truly is an amazing place and this exploration route is a fantastic way to ensure you make the most of your time there and don't miss a thing.
Start/Finish Point
This route starts from the Karamea town centre (Market Cross) and returns to the Karamea town centre.
Terrain includes
A mixture of Tarmac, Grade 1 and Grade 2 gravel roads however the access track to the Karamea River Mouth is a Grade 3 sandy 4X4 track. This Grade 3 track is an in/out track so it can be omitted if you are two-up, on a big bike or simply want to keep the route to a maximum of Grade 2. For the adventurous, the Grade 3 track out to the river mouth is doable on all bikes, albeit with a little bike wrestling and a little sweating! The effort is well worth it.

Ride Time
While this can be ridden in half a day, there is so much to see on this route and so many spots to stop off at for a look around, this really makes a great full day ride.
Access Permission
All the routes are public or public paper roads. There is however one small track that crosses private land, and while it is a public paper road, it is best to knock on the land owners door to ask for access which is readily given without issue. Full info is given in Leg 1.
Access Limitations
The Karamea River Mouth 4X4 track can be subject to erosion caused by high seas and strong winds. Until repeated 4X4 traffic reforms the track, you may be forced to drop down off the track and ride along the beach to reach the Karamea River confluence. This is not a major issue as the beach sand is quite predictable and can be ridden without sinking if you maintain speed.
