Route Overview

General Overview
A fantastic loop route through High Country farming stations offering epic sights and seriously good riding.
Start/Finish Point
Being a loop route this can be started from a number of points however the route perfectly suits being started at Hanmer Springs which makes a great two or three day trip.
Terrain includes
Other than a tarmac section from Blenheim to St Arnaud, the terrain is predominantly gravel roads and four-wheel-drive tracks mostly grade 1, 2 and 3. There is only one grade 5 section which is the upper stretch towards the headwaters of the Leatham River. At times of low flow this section can be considered a grade 2 or 3, at times of medium/high flow the crossings can be challenging and certainly warrant a grade 5 rating and need to be treated with caution. The good thing about this stretch is, if you want to keep the entire route to nothing greater than a grade 3 track, you can simply omit the upper section of the Leatham River and camp up at Caves Hut instead of Bottom Gordons Hut.
Distance
588 km
Max Fuel Leg
220 km
Ride Time
This route can be ridden over 2 solid days of riding, or 3 days which sees the end of the day 2 camping up in Edwards Valley and having a short leisurely ride out to Hanmer on the 3rd day.
Accommodation
This route utilises huts and DOC camping areas. It is important to ensure you have a tent because you cannot guarantee that the huts will be available.
Access Permission
Big Station utilises four routes that need to be ridden within the open periods. One of them has a small gate fee of approximately $15, two of them require you to preregister your bike through a website. More info on each of the route leg pages.
Access Limitations
While the open periods are generally reliable year to year, some of the roads/tracks within the Big Station route may be closed due to weather conditions. This can include snow that can render some of the high altitude passes impassable, extremely wet conditions where tracks are close to minimise track damage, and extremely dry conditions where tracks are closed to avoid fire risk.
